Pasta

Something magical happened to this image when I got it into the “dark room.” I processed this one pretty heavily, removing uninteresting details from the background and emphasizing shadows and light.

  1. Nicely done! did you use an external strobe light or just the available light from a window / open door?

  2. The play of light and shade is indeed beautifully rendered in this picture. If that is not magical, I don’t know what it is.

  3. Looks great, good work.

  4. “Pasta, daddy, Pasta!!”
    Really nice!!!!!

  5. Most of the light in this image is supplied from an overhead incandescent bulb, which is about three feet behind and one foot above the pasta. I shot it without a flash. The light play in this image is actually coming through the pasta. I think that the interesting shapes in the noodles are what makes this works.

  6. Hi James,

If I didn’t read your title, it would have taken me a while to realize this was pasta. The shapes and the contours look so different, just because you played with the lighting. I thought it was a bunch of heavy semi-transparent paper or plastic. You’re right, this truly is magical. :)

  7. I love the perspective of the shot, just imagining it in 3D, now that would be cool ;)

  8. Looks fantastic. I don’t think I could ever get this to happen. to any of my pictures but I’m a newbie to photography and processing. I love the way you’ve created some of these fantastic looking shapes and the black background just highlights the work you’ve done with the shadows.

  9. Have you ever considered adding more movies to your weblog posts to preserve the readers additional entertained?

I only ask because I’m a complete tool, and I can’t tell that this is a photography website, not a videography site.

  10. You should put up the image before it was processed so we can see the before and after. It would be great to see how you processed it to change the way the shadows fell and how the background has made the processed image more dramatic.

  11. I am loving the look of the shot. I have tried to do the same thing, you will be pleased to learn that it looks nothing like yours. I guess I will have to keep trying…

  12. wow, i will always prefer black and white over colour photography
