Today I’m pleased to bring you a guest post from Mui of Mui Tsun Photography.
I love the way she uses depth of focus to draw the eye to the subject of this photo. Here’s what she has to say:
I took this at the beginning of spring, when the daffodils started to bloom. I noticed this lone one standing proud on a pile of soil outside a farmhouse barn. Of course I just had to photograph it. I tried to shoot it from an unusual angle, and to set it off its surroundings. This image from that day’s session is my favourite.
I agree – the angle works great in this image. It’s something I think about often when I take pictures. Get to a different angle and see how things look… you might get a great result. Check out Mui’s Web site (link below). If you’re in the Norfolk area (U.K.), and need a professional, I recommend her work.

I love how she described this Daffodil “I noticed this lone one standing proud on a pile of soil outside a farmhouse barn.” It is so poetic :dd
Hi Jane
I’ve never been considered poetic before. So thanks!
Mui
It’s amazing to see the ONE daffodil left standing alone. I love the angle she shot it at and showing all the dirt and debris that’s surrounding it.

Funny you should mention that… at our house, it’s always a large group of daffodils, never just one.
Great picture. I love finding those unique finds in the middle of messes. I admire the eye that Mui Tsun has. Thanks for sharing!
It’s like the daffodil is looking right at the camera. I like this picture so I’m going to check out her site. Thanks for sharing this!
Also the way the color works is interesting… I like the way the flower is the only brightly colored thing in the image. With almost half the image being the dirt pile, it makes the flower look even more of a ‘light in the wilderness’.
Thank you all for your kind words.
It was a lovely sunny day when I spotted this daffodil. The light was a little too harsh for my liking, but I wasn’t going to risk waiting for another day to shoot it, in case someone would have pulled it out. The lighting turned out to be okay in the end and I was really pleased with the result.
I love this site. Thanks to James for the opportunity to guest post and for sharing with us his images.
It’s my pleasure, Mui. We should do it again soon.
Does anyone remember the show “Little House on the Prairie”? The photo (with the barn in the background) looks like a shot that the makers of that show would take leading into a scene…

My friend is into photography and seeing the pictures she develops makes me more interested in this hobby. Did you focus on the daffodil, then moved the camera a bit to get the angle?
Hi Mui,
Nice shot there. very vibrant and lively angle.
Can you give it another shot on the Winter, let see how you
can protray it?
Romantic?
cheers
