Almost Brilliant

Light Bulbs

A little photo fun of a wooden box of light bulbs… lit from within from a string of battery operated LEDs. Three second exposure at F22 – then tweaked vigorously in Lightroom to get the right amount of light and dark.

I don’t like CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs). I just don’t think the color tone is nice, they’re fragile, they’re toxic… shall I go on? LED technology is just barely teetering into its infancy, but that’s the future of lighting. Easy to dim, and the color range is limitless. At $20 a pop, not too many people are using them, but I’m thinking about buying my first one soon.

I don’t really want to use any of these anyways. ๐Ÿ™‚

Nice effect, although I must say you took a risk by putting this all together, because they are indeed toxic and a wound from bulb fragments is not very pleasant.

BTW James, do you intentionally remove the exif data from your pics, or the theme does it automatically?

  2. I don’t remove it on purpose.

When I used Thesis, I had a plug-in written by Kristarella called Thesography that did some auto-EXIF data on the images, but that plug-in is written specifically for Thesis. At some point, I’d like to have it automatically added again. I know that the plug-in can be repurposed for other themes, but I haven’t been brave enough to tackle it yet.

  3. Yeesh, that is a box of cuts waiting to happen! Great photo though.

  4. I love the picture. Very creative use of light bulbs I think. And you did something I’d loved to poke my nose into. Using a higher aperture with a longer expose time. Shame my camera is so limited on the aperture part.

I actually myself didn’t realize that doing this photo could have been harmful but after reading the other comments it might be the case. Even though that, I do have to say that sometimes it’s worth the risk.

  5. Nice shot!!! The color is perfect and the effect is just beautiful. Keep the cool posts coming. I love it!

  6. Cool photo ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. so light bulbs are nice, even the zero pun with the ruler.

  25. Hi,
I really love the picture. Very creative use of light bulbs but I must say you took a risk by putting this all together because even a small wound of bulb fragment is really a bad experience.

    Regards,

  26. We changed our lighting in our house to LED, and I can tell you I will never go back. Something about fluorescent office lighting is very off-putting to me now. Did you finally cave in and get some? They’re worth it! I promise ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. So creative, I love the idea and the effect of the LED lights shining through the others! Well done ๐Ÿ™‚
