There’s a story behind this shot.
Regular readers (viewers?) of this blog will know how frustrated I was with my previous camera(s). After losing my Pentax, I tried a Fuji and Sony, and kept finding my iPhone to be superior to these point-and-shoot cameras. After considering many models by both Canon and Nikon, I chose the Nikon D90.
In my first two weeks with the camera, I experienced various issues, including flashing ERR, F–, and CHA; three different errors that could only be cleared by removing the battery from the camera or removing the lens. To say I was frustrated would be an understatement.
Today Claire and I were at the Manchester mall, and whilst there I ducked into the Ritz to drool over the flashes. While I was talking to my new buddy Leonard about flashes, I asked him about the flashing ERR and what might cause it. Within about a minute, he told me that the combination of errors I was receiving indicated that I had a unit that was suffering from known issues, and suggested I go home to retrieve the rest of my camera (the box and other periferals) so he could exchange it.
During the exchange we discussed many things, including the 70-300 mm lens, which I ended up accepting as part of a package deal. Turns out Leonard fixed up the financing, gave me some free prints, and basically took care of me to the point that the lens ended up costing me about half what it would have if I came back a month later to purchase it.
So here’s my first attempt at shooting the moon with the new beauty (taken on 1/31). Claire says the lens is fancy. Considering I took this photo with the lens extended to 300 mm and no tripod, I’m inclined to agree.
- Aperture: f/5.6
- Camera: NIKON D90
- Focal length: 300 mm
- ISO: 400
- Shutter speed: 1/500 s

Wow! Not bad! “not bad” is an understatement! It’s pretty cool! Did you really take this photo? It looked so… awesome! Photography is a very expensive hobby for me.. how i wish i can buy my own camera!
Hey really nice pic! I like how detailed it is and how good of a shot it is. Makes me want to go buy a better camera….
Sweeeeeeeeeeeet! I think I can almost see a lunar rover if I squint and angle my head just right. Are you sure you weren’t using a telescope?! That’s an amazing lens. Good customer service story, too.
Be careful… looking at pictures like this can cost you a lot of money if you’re even thinking about a new camera. I should know!
Glad you all enjoyed it as much as I did.
It was nicely taken photo of the moon. It was catchy and simple. I do love photography too but don’t have the time to create a separate blog for the hobby.

the moon is amazing
That is some impressive use of your telephoto lens! I love how you can actually see the texture of the craters on the uppermost parts of the moon. I bet this photo would look excellent as a backlit acrylic photo panel! This photograph really makes me want to trade in my point-and-shoot Panasonic for a camera with the capability to take such stunning shots. But of course the camera is nothing without the photographer! Well done!
I found myself beginning to howl! AROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Wasn’t this the wolf moon?
I think technically it was the next day, but yes!
Man you really haven’t had much luck with cameras until now. I’m glad you found one and it does look like a beaut.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous of having the 70-300mm lens. Very nice picture, especially for shooting it handheld!
