Jupiter rises in Portsmouth

Jupiter over Portsmouth

I love Portsmouth, but have never been at night for some reason. Today we got off to a late start and ended up there as the sky turned to black.

An amateur astronomer set up his telescope in front of the local Starbucks and invited passers by to peer through its lens, where he lined up Jupiter. His telescope was too small to make out the details of the planet, but four of its moons were in clear view. It was very cool – enough to make one twinge for a telescope, if ever so briefly. The bright pin-point of light near the buildings in the sky is Jupiter.
